Why is my thermostat running the Fan?

If your Fan is set to ON, then it will continue to run until set to AUTO.

If your Fan is set to AUTO, the fan will only run because of one of the following reasons:

  • The fan will begin running five (5) seconds before cooling is enabled. The fan will continue running during an entire cooling cycle and will continue for an additional two (2) minutes after the cooling cycle has ended, this is called a Purge Cycle.
  • If your thermostat is configured to enable the fan for a heating cycle (i.e., Heat Needs Fan parameter is set to Yes), the fan will be begin running five (5) seconds before heating is enabled. The fan will continue running during an entire heating cycle and will continue for two (2) minutes after the heating cycle has ended, this is called a Purge Cycle.
  • If your thermostat has a configured Minimum Fan Circulation parameter, your thermostat will track how many minutes each hour the fan has been enabled. If the fan has not been enabled the pre-configured minimum fan circulation minutes, your thermostat will automatically enable the fan for these additional minutes.
  • If your thermostat has a CO2 sensor, when it reaches or exceeds the set CO2 threshold the fan will turn on for ventilation, regardless if Fan is set to ON or AUTO.
Note: For conventional HVAC systems, the Pelican thermostat the fan will only be enabled by your Pelican thermostat if the configuration parameter ‘Heat Needs Fan’ is set to Yes. Otherwise, the HVAC equipment will automatically turn On the fan for heat.

When should the Fan be running?

Most codes dictate that your fan should be On during all standard occupied periods, so that you are providing adequate ventilation into the space.

Some codes also require the fan to be On one (1) hour before normal occupied hours to pre-ventilate spaces.
